Shyampukur Bati, Ramakrishna Math
- Sri Ramakrishna stayed at this house for 70 days in 1885 (2nd October to 11th December) before moving to Cossipore Udyan Bati.
- The house is also sanctified by the stay of Holy Mother and the monastic disciples of Sri Ramakrishna (Narendra, Rakhal, Sarat, Sashi, Latu, Buro Gopal etc).
- On 6th October, Kali Pujo night, Sri Ramakrishna assumed the posture of Kali while in trance. In this posture, the two hands of the Goddess are in ‘bara’ and ‘abhaya’ form and since then ‘Barabhay puja’ is performed on the Kali puja night at this center.
- Vijoy Krishna Goswami, Sri M, Dr. Mahendralal Sarkar, Nati Binodini and many other lay devotees received blessings here. It was here that Christian Father Prabhudayal Misra had a vision of Jesus Christ in Sri Ramakrishna.
- Located amidst busy residential locality, the sprawling balconies and the adjacent Shiva temple, captures a passerby immediately.
- Entering the premises, one finds a courtyard leading to the first floor where Sri Ramakrishna’s room with the holy shrine is situated.
- A museum is present next to this room. The museum has beautiful pictorial depiction and mural works of the events associated with the Master’s life during his stay here. A chowki (bench) where the Master sat is well preserved.
- A photograph of Sri Ramakrishna in seated posture was taken at the time when photography was in a nascent stage. Abhinash Chandra Daw, who was an apprentice at the Burn and Shepherd Company, took this photo. The camera lens including the tripod stand is preserved.
- Steep stairways lead to the second floor which has a very small room where Sri Sarada Devi stayed and an adjacent large terrace.
- The building was acquired by the Ramakrishna Math in the year 2010. Ramakrishna Math (Shyampukur Bati) was started as a sub-center of Ramakrishna Math (Balaram Mandir). It was made a full-fledged branch center in 2017.
- Public activities include a homeopathic dispensary, library, daily worship, fortnightly Ramnam Sankirtan, religious classes, and celebration of major religious festivals including the birthdays of the Holy Trio as well as social welfare works.
- The Master had blessed many of his lay disciples by vising their houses at the nearby locality. One such building belonging to Kalipada Ghosh bears a plaque mentioning the event.
