Sri Aurobindo Bhavan was established at No. 8, Shakespeare Sarani , Calcutta (then No. 4, Theatre Road in 1872) at the place where Sri Aurobindo was born in the early hours of August 15 th 1872 . Today, this place is actively involved in disseminating the teachings of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother for the moral and spiritual upliftment of people The Entrance The Building The Plaque at the Etnrance The staircase to second floor The Emblem engraved at the entrance door The Varendah at the second floor This establishment was as per " The Sri Aurobindo Memorial Act", enacted by West Bengal Assembly in 1972 . The actual handing over took place on 15 th August 1972 in order to commemorate Sri Aurobindo's Centenary Birthday. The Governor of West Bengal is the ex–officio Chairman of Sri Aurobindo Samiti and the Chief Minister of West Bengal is an ex-officio member.
