GARDEN REACH SHIPBUILDERS AND ENGINEERS LIMITED

  • Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) was established in 1884 by East India Company, as a workshop to repair vessels of River Steam Navigation Company. 
  • In 1934, the Company was registered under the Indian Companies Act, 1913 and was renamed as Garden Reach Workshops (GRW) Limited. During 1939 -1945 the company was actively involved in the World War II.The Government of India took over the same in 1960


  • The primary role of this riverine shipyard has been building warships and other vessel for the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard. 
  • The diverse category of vessels built includes 05 ton boats to 24600 ton Fleet Tanker, world class Frigates and Fast Attack Crafts. Its role in defense preparedness of Indian Navy is undeniable.
  • Other activities comprise of engineering business with a product profile of pre-fabricated steel bridges, various deck machinery items & assembly/testing/overhauling of marine diesel engines.
  • The 1st warship of Independent India, INS Ajay was delivered to the Indian Navy in 1961 by Jawaharlal Nehru. 
  • GRSE, a Mini Ratna Category 1 Company has so far delivered 108 warships to Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, Mauritius Coast Guard and Seychelles Coast Guard & is the only shipyard to achieve this Centennial Mark. The 1st warship, offshore Patrol Vessel, CGS Barracuda was exported to Mauritius in 2014. Recently, MVMA LISHA was delivered to Republic of Guyana on 12th January 2023. 
  • GRSE’s motto is in tune with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
  • The launch of a majestic vessel is a spectacular event and a moment of pride for the nation. End launch is generally carried out here. 



  • The workshop boasts of a state-of-the-art Virtual Reality Lab and a team of over 100 maritime designers. It has a capacity to build 20 ships (08 large & 12 small) concurrently. 
  • The shipyard has been profit making and dividend paying company for the past 28 years with zero debt record. The GoI holds 74.5% of the company’s stake while the remaining is to the public. 
  • The Company has grabbed prestigious awards for its proficiency. 

  • The operations are carried out at Main Works. The facility which occupies approximately 48 acres of land consists of Dry Dock, Inclined Berth, River Jetties, Building Berth, and Boat Shed for manufacturing Fast Interceptor Boat. 



  • The Fitting Out Jetty (FOJ) Unit occupies 18 acres of land meant for fitting out and repair of ships
  • Rajabagan Dockyard is spread over 31.15 acres with a 550 M open river front is capable of pre-launch activities of three (3) 50 M-sized ships and post-launch outfitting of four (4) ships at one time at open river. A vessel of 175 m length and 7 m breadth can navigate through the river bent. The still water river is congenial for weapon alignment. 
  • The 61 Park Unit is located on 11.07 acres of land is the primary unit for portable steel bridge production. It also houses the ship design office, corporate planning and commercial.
  • GRSE Bhavan at 61, Garden Reach Road houses the official building with an interactive museum. Officers from the Indian Navy and Engineers head the organization.
