Bangiya Sahitya Parishat


  • Bangiya Sahitya Parishat situated at 243, 1, Acharya Prafulla Chandra Road, Manicktala was established on 23rd July 1893. 
  • Its objective was to study and develop the Bengali Language and Literature. Cultural, historical, archaeological, sociological and other scientific studies and researches with special reference to Bengal are also carried out. 
  • At the time of its establishment at the residence of Raja Benoy Krishna Dev of Sovabazar, it was named ‘Bengal Academy of Literature’. The Institution was renamed as Bangiya Sahitya Parishat in 1894.  
  • Romesh Chunder Dutt was the first president and Rabindranath Tagore and Nabinchandra Sen were the first vice presidents. 
  • The building has been declared as a Heritage property.

  • Bangiya Sahitya Parisat Chitrasala’ was founded in 1908.
  • Bangiya Sahitya Parishat Museum of Old Manuscripts, called ‘Bangiya Sahitya Parishat Puthisala’, was established in 1894 (1301 B.S.) as per the proposal of Jatindranath Roychowdhury and Rajanikanta Gupta. The museum boasts a collection of 9427 manuscripts in Bengali, Sanskrit, Hindi, Assamese, Oriya, Tibetan, Persian and Ceylonese including manuscripts written on ancient writing materials like palm-leaf, paper made of cotton pulp, bark of trees etc. 
  • Regular publications, seminars, workshops are held. Stalwarts of the Bengal renaissance were associated with this organization.

Balmer Lawrie & Co. Ltd.

Stephen George Balmer and Alexander Lawrie were two Scottish entrepreneurs, who founded the Balmer Lawrie & Co. Ltd. at Kolkata on 1 st February, 1867 . The founding fathers had formed the Company as an ‘Agency House’ and the agency business was primarily in trading.  The range of business spanned over Tea, Shipping, Insurance, Banking, Trading and Manufacturing. The initial products included tea leaves, tea seeds, kerosene, pharmaceuticals, wines and lubricating oils.  It was the sole agent of Calcutta to manufacture one of the first Scotch whiskies – Lafroaig Islay.  A significant part of Balmer Lawrie's business was managing and transferring Indian military pensions to those who returned to Britain post Independence. Ramakrishna Math (Yogodyan), Kankurgachi

Originally known as “Sri Sri Ramakrishna Samadhi Mahapeeth Sri Yogodyan” and later as “Ramakrishna Yogodyan Math”, this place came into existence before the formation of the first Ramakrishna Math at Baranagore, on 19 th October,1886 . Entrance to the Yogodyan Lane Entrance to the premises Founded by Sri Ram Chandra Dutta, the Yogodyan Math was blessed by Sri Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa’s visit in 1883 and 1885. The Math enshrines a part of the sacred relics of Sri Ramakrishna since 23 rd August 1886 (Janmastami Tithi) where the present Temple stands now.
