Bhramo Samaj

  • Brahmo Samaj was a society of the worshippers of the One True God. Brahmo means one whoworships Brahma, or the Supreme Spirit of the universe, and Samaj means a community of men. The Brahmo Samaj, therefore, represents a body of men who are struggling, to establish the worship of the Supreme Being in spirit as opposed to the prevailing idolatry. It was one of the most influential religious movements in India.
  • It was started at Calcutta on 20th August 1828 by Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Dwarkanath Tagore as reformation of the prevailing treachery of Brahmanical practices and marked the onset of the Bengal Renaissance of the 19th century. This day was celebrated by as Bhadrotsab
  • Its Trust Deed was made in 1830 formalizing its inception and it was duly and publicly inaugurated on 23rd January 1830 by the consecration of the first house of prayer at Chitpore road. This day is celebrated by as Maghotsab.
  • After Raja Ram Mohan’s death in 1833 near Bristol (UK), the Sabha was almost lost.
  • On 6th October 1839, Debendranath Tagore, son of Dwarkanath Tagore, established Tattvaranjini Sabha which was shortly thereafter renamed the Tattwabodhini ("Truth-seekers") Sabha. Initially confined to immediate members of the Tagore family, in two years it mustered over 500 members.
  • In 1843 (7 Pous 1765 of Bengali Calendar) Debendranath Tagore and twenty other Tattwabodhini stalwarts were formally invited by Pt. Vidyabagish into the Trust of Brahmo Sabha. The Pous Mela at Santiniketan starts on this day. From this day forth, the Tattwabodhini Sabha dedicated itself to promoting Ram Mohan Roy's ideologies.
  • Due to the radical ideologies of Keshab Chandra Sen who believed in the spirit of Christianity like inclusion of teachings from all religions even from Christianity made the Brahmo Samaj split into two different organizations in 1866.
  • Maharishi Debendranath Tagore’s organization came to be known as Adi Brahmo Samaj, while Keshab Chandra Sen’s organization was known as Bharatvarshiya Brahmo Samaj
  • The Sadharan Brahmo Samaj was formed as a result of disagreement among members of the Brahmo Samaj in a public meeting of Brahmos held in the Town Hall of Calcutta on 15th May 1878. A letter from the Maharshi Devendranath Tagore communicating his blessings and prayer for the success of the new Samaj was read in the meeting. At the time of its foundation was headed by Ananda Mohan Bose, Shibchandra Deb and Umeshchandra Datta.
