Sri Aurobindo Bhavan and Pathmandir

  •  Sri Aurobindo Bhavan was established at No. 8, Shakespeare Sarani, Calcutta (then No. 4, Theatre Road in 1872) at the place where Sri Aurobindo was born in the early hours of August 15th 1872.Today, this place is actively involved in disseminating the teachings of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother for the moral and spiritual upliftment of people

  • This establishment was as per "The Sri Aurobindo Memorial Act", enacted by West Bengal Assembly in 1972. The actual handing over took place on 15th August 1972 in order to commemorate Sri Aurobindo's Centenary Birthday. The Governor of West Bengal is the ex–officio Chairman of Sri Aurobindo Samiti and the Chief Minister of West Bengal is an ex-officio member. The membership of Sri Aurobindo Samiti is composed of nominees of the State Government and Sri Aurobindo Ashram Trust, Pondicherry.
  • Shrine -The sacred relics of Sri Aurobindo were enshrined in the premises on 16th February 1973 along with the construction of a memorial shrine where devotees come regularly to pay homage. 
"On 15.1.73, The Mother gave the Sacred Relics of Sri Aurobindo to Bholanath Sen, Minister, Government of West Bengal and Himanghsu Kumar Niyogi, President, Sri Aurobindo Pathamandir, for enshrining at Sri Aurobindo Bhavan. At Calcutta, the relics were taken to the Alipore Central Jail where Sri Aurobindo was detained as an under trial prisoner and then to Alipore Court where he was tried and acquitted. Arranged by the Government in collaboration with the Pathamandir, the relics were taken round all the Districts of West Bengal. On 16.02.73, the Relics reached Jadavpur University, developed out of the National College of which Sri Aurobindo was the first Principal. From there, in one of the longest of recent processions in Calcutta, they were taken to Sri Aurobindo Bhavan where they were enshrined by Shri A. L. Dias, Governor of West Bengal."

  • Museum: On the second floor of the building, a huge hall and varendah is used for displaying photographs and writings depicting the life and ideologies of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother along with some items used by The Mother.

  • The General Library and the Reading Room have over 40,000 books in English, Bengali and Hindi and more than 100 periodicals on various subjects. 
  • A Children’s corner is also present. 
  • Regular discourses are held for the public.
  • At the Sri Aurobindo Ashram Publication stall one can purchase books, incense sticks and other  handcrafted items.
  • Sri Aurobindo Pathmandir 
Located at 15, Bankim Chatterjee Street this public institute is the only one of its kind outside Pondicherry dedicated to dissemination of the ideologies of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. It was inaugurated on 15th August 1941. Sri Aurobindo frequented this street from May 1909 to February 1910 on his way to 'Karmayogin' office at Shyampukur street. Devoties perform meditation and gather knowledge at the well-equipped library. The publication section, permanent exhibition of books and sales counter are popular attractions here.
