Nistarini Kali Temple

  • One of the most beautiful yet lesser known Hindu temple in Kolkata is dedicated to Goddess Kali who is manifested here as Nistarini Kali.
  • Two different yet interesting stories describe the foundation of this Navaratna temple near Hedua Park at 25, Bethune Row.
  • According to one belief, Rani Rashmoni while constructing the Bhabatarini temple in 1855 at Dakshineshwar rejected a particular idol. Ten years later, in 1865, Ishwar Chandra Naan, witnessed Devi Kali in his dreams who said, “Son, for the last ten years, I have been a prisoner. Rescue me, establish me, and make arrangements for my puja.” He located the idol at a warehouse and established it near his home.
  • According to the other story, Krishna Chandra Singha created an idol of Goddess Kali resembling the Bhabatarini of Dakshineswar Temple from Varanasi. However, he was unable to establish the idol and handed it over to his neighbour, Ishwar Chandra Naan.
  • The day on which the idol of Nistarini Kali was installed was that of the Rathyatra in the year 1865. Every year, on this day, Kali puja is performed here by the effort of The Ishwar Chandra Naan Debottar Trust. Elaborate worship is held on Kartick amavasya.
  • The Temple is also known as Ichhapurti Mandir or Ichhamoyi Kali Mandir or Ichha Kali Mandir due to a popular myth that wishes of devotees fulfilled here by Mata Nistarini Devi.
  • Mata Nistarini Devi temple is situated between two Shiv temples. There is also a Radha Krishna temple.
  • This is a very peaceful and spiritual place of worship with pristine white architecture.
