Satyendra Nath Bose: his residence and SNBNCBS
Residence -
- 22 Ishwar Mill Lane, one of the bye lanes of Bidhan Sarani, was the home of the renowned scientist Satyendra Nath Bose, who in his early years resided in the Goabagan area. The building is the residence of Bose's descendants.
- S. N. Bose (Jan 1,1894- Feb 4,1974) was a colossal in theoretical physics and has made some of the most fundamental conceptual contributions in the development of Quantum mechanics and quantum statistics. The Boson particle (following Bose-Einstein statistics) was named after him by Paul Dirac.
- The Bose-Einstein principle was initially conceptualized by Bose, Later Einstein translated the theory into German (for ease in publication) and extended its application to natural gases.
- He graduated from Presidency College where his batchmate was the other famous Indian physicist - Meghnad Saha. Bose joined the faculty of Calcutta University in 1916 and left for Dhaka in 1921. Later he became the Khaira professor of Calcutta University in 1945 and served for a while as the vice chancellor of Viswa Bharati. He was made the national professor in 1958.
- He was profoundly interested in the languages, literature, music and different forms of art,
- Bose was a Fellow of Royal Society and a recipient of Padma Vibhushan in 1954.

S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences
- The S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Salt Lake, an autonomous research institute established in 1986, is associated with his legacy. In the words of Prof. Partha Ghose “Bose’s work stood at the transition between the ‘old quantum theory’ of Planck, Bohr and Einstein and the new quantum mechanics of Schrodinger, Heisenberg, born, Dirac and others”.
- The faculties and research scholars of the institute make immense contributions in the fields of Astrophysics & high energy physics, condensed matter and material physics, physics of complex systems as well as chemical and biological sciences.
- The sprawling campus, sophisticated instrumentations, academic pursuits and manicured lawns add to the charm of the place.
- The S. N. Bose archive within this campus meticulously maintains several items related to him. The display includes his biographical resume, photographs, letters, documents related to his calculations, recordings of his interviews, documentary as well as personal items like pen and specs.
- Bose was known for his views on equality of gender in sciences, He was the mentor of Dr. Purnima Sinha, one of the first Bengali women to earn a doctorate degree in physics. She worked in the field of X-ray crystallography of clay minerals.
