LADY BRABOURNE COLLEGE
Lady Brabourne College was established in July 1939, following the initiative of the then Prime Minister of Bengal, A. K. Fazlul Huq. It was named after the Doreen Baroness Brabourne (wife of Lord Brabourne, the Governor of Bengal till his death in February 1939). She took the initiative in establishing this institution following complaints from Muslim girls that they were discriminated against their Hindu counterparts. The college made a modest beginning with 35 Muslim students and 9 faculty members in a rented house in Park Circus. The foundation stone of the building in which it is presently housed was laid on 26th August 1939 by Sir J. Woodhead the then Governor of Bengal. One of the premier Institutions for women's education in India, it is known till date for having excellent academic environment; which has resulted in numerous illustrious alumni in both science and humanities.
The
campus is located at Suhrawardy Avenue. Often it is believed that the road was
named after Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, the chief minister of Bengal, who was
known as the ‘Butcher of Bengal’ due to his notorious activities. Contradictorily,
the road gets its name after his uncle, Hassan Shaheed Suhrawardy, who was a
Bengali diplomat, scholar and art-critic.
I proudly call this prestigious institution my alma mater.
